Zion Boys Basketball temn traveled down to Olney East Richland HS last Friday night and fell in the end 57-41 in conference play. Earlier in the week the Braves fell to Paris in a close one 67-66. MZ's overall record is 4-13 currently. Against Olney, the Braves came out in similar fashion to Olney, but by halftime Olney had the edge up at 27-19. Olney ran away with the game after the half with an impressive 19 points in the 3rd quarter of action to take the advantage and win this contest. Against Paris earlier last week, Dalton Sharp led the way with 20 points and Brody Rothrock chipped in 16 as the Braves went nose-to-nose with Paris. The game was 28-27 MZ at the half break. The Braves came up strong with 18 points in the 3rd, but Paris answered late in the game and took it in overtime. Just like the boys record last week Mt. Zion faced off against Olney and fell 46-35 and earlier in the week fell to Paris as well 54-37. The girls are 7-11 after these games. Against Olney, Mackenzie Steck led the way with 14 points, but Olney took the edge from the get-go with 12 points in the 1 st and 13 in the 2nd to lead at the half 25- 13. The Lady Braves came back a bit in the 3rd quarter with a 16 point effort, but it was not enough in the end and the Lady Braves fell in the end. Against Paris earlier in the week, the start looked similar to that of Olney's as Paris took the quick lead at the half 28-20. Paris managed to Continue to outscore the Lady Braves in the final two quarters to take the conference win. Turnin' Back Time-a look back at 50 years of MZ history through the Mt. Zion Region News 50 years ago this week in the Region News (1962): (Photo # 1) McGaughey Grade School, Mt. Zion Grade, Mt. Zion Jr. High, and Mt. Zion High School PTA completed a 12 hour Study course led by Mrs. Ocal Eastham District 9 Director. Those completing the course pictured above Mrs. Whitehouse, Mrs. Fulk, Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. Camren, Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Chaney, and Mr. Dennis. The course was held at McGaughey Grade School. Needing that morning coffee fix? In 1962 at Ken's Super-Way Food Store in Mt. Zion you could buy 2 lbs. of Folger's Coffee for $1.09. 40 years ago tihs week in the Region News (1972): Mr. Zion School Board voted to accept the resignation of High School English Teacher John Hanson due to health reasons. Dennis Clayton Bachman was hired to fill this vacancy at a base salary of $ 7,400/year. 30 years ago this week in the. Regio n News (1982): (Photo # 2)Region News Business of the Week was the Mr. Zion Presbyterian Child Care Center. Director was Donna Fellows and the center first opened in 1977 licensed by the Dept. of Children and Family Services. The center provided child care on a daily program from 6:30 AM to 6 PM year around. Enrollment was open to children from age 2 years to 10years of age. There were 14 employed by teh Center in 1982: Donna Fellows-Director, Donna Eastin-Assistant Director/Teacher, Colleen Brewer-Aide, Valerie Cowgill-Aide, Michael Elwell-Custodian, Cheri Fulk-Aide, Dennis Hodge-Custodian, Linda Schaub-Cook, Carolyn Smith-Bookkeeper, Gayle Tipsword-Teacher, Sharon Wicker-Teacher, Debbie Wiese-Teacher, Debbie Wiley-Teacher, Jane Woods-Cook..20 years ago this week in the Region News (1992): (Photo # 4)With Mt. Zion School District faced with less state funding and district shortfall, the Mt. Zion School Board voted unanimously to close Dalton City Grade School. Of the 120 students at Dalton City Grade 100 of them would transfer to McGaughey Elementary with the other 20 divided between Salem and Mt. Zion Grade. (Photo # 3) The Mt. Zion Park Foundation/Lions Club Community Center was set to be complete by May according to Lions Club President Pete Williams. Pictured Above Jim Wiley and Paul Epling cut duct work to finish up the heating system in the new center. 10 years ago this week in the Region News (2002): (Photo #5) The following Mt. Zion Intermediate Students participated in the 20th annual Decatur Elks Lodge # 401 Hoop Shoot free throw contest: Madison Huskey, Nick Burge, Taylor Parks, Clark Baumberger, Hannah Myers, and Mark Yelovich. Coach Matt Smith conducted the contest at the Mt. Zion Intermediate School and chose the above individuals as the best free throw shooters at MZ Intermediate. Decatur Park District Offers Baseball Instructional Clinic Mt. Zionwrestling defeats Mattoon/Shelbyville At the Baseball Instructional Clinic at the DISC, athletes aged 8 - 14 will improve fundamentals and build skills in throwing, base running, hitting, catching, and fielding. The Boy's Basketball: clinic meets on Saturdays, January 21 and 28 from noon - 2 p.m. Millikin University coaches and players lead this great winter session at the DISC, 1295 W. Wood. Girl's Basketball: Wrestling: f Fee is $54 or $45 with a resident discount. Early registration will be held through January 16; add $5 afterwards. For more information, call the DISC at 429-3472.
