Zion Knights of Columbus recently made a donation to the Decatur Family Refuge. The organization is family shelter that upon completion will house five families for up to 90 days. Fred deVera, President of the board and his wife Mary Lou,Treasurer, are both members of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit in Mt. Zion. Two years ago the couple went to a 28 week program called Just Faith that focuses on social justice issues. The organization grew out of the Interfaith Committee to End Poverty in Decatur which was born at a poverty summit that was held in November 2008 x, here agencies and pastors identified what gaps in the community needed to be filled. One of those was that there was no shelter for families. Shortly after that the organization purchased the building. Labor has been donated for some of the plumbing and electricity. They have also had some paid and work release workers. The main floor consists of a kitchen that will be used for meal for residents and a multipurpose room that will be used for dining, studying and family time. Upstairs are. the five rooms that families will be housed in. Each room will have a name like hope, dream and faith. Different churches are also taking ownership of rooms to decorate them according to Jean Hovland. They are also seeking churches willing to adopt a family and follow them for the next year.
