t Wednesday, September 21, 2011 The Region News Page 7 Trevor Brothers, Sports Editor remain Moving into this week of prep play it was the thoughts of some that Mt. Zion would not have a chance against a Charleston team that had knocked off Effingham a few weeks back. Those thoughts were proved wrong by the efforts and thus ending score of Mt. Zion as they shut down Charleston 35-0 due to a 446 yard ground pound and a smothering Braves defense. The Braves sustained their undefeated Apollo Conference status at 3-0 and boosted their overall record to 3-1. " We played a very physical game tonight. Our boys played with heart, guts, score. and and held t gtrong-, do. team to no points. We worked hard and our boys deserved this," stated Braves Head Coach Scott Davis following a big Mt. Zion win at home against Charleston. The Braves had fire in their eyes from the first step onto the field. The Mt. Zion energy could be felt and the Braves offense off a QB keeper by #16 Nick Stroud put the MZ boys to the board 7-0 in the first quarter of action. It was not all about the offense. The Mt. Zion defense continues to show (TOP LEFT) #30 Jacob Wallis busts through for yards as teammates block. (TOP RIGHT) #58 Mason Clark jumps at Charleston QB. (ABOVE) #16 Nick Stroud breaks free for " Right from the start I liked the energy our defense was producing...these boys played hard tonight and it showed," stated Coach Scott Davis. The Braves were on top of every Charleston play with multiple Braves crunching Charleston ball carriers. Continually throughout the night the Mt. Zion defense amassed QB sacks with big hits by players like Brock Elliott, Mason Clark, Brock Lemmon, and crew. The Braves ground pound was back to work in the 2nd quarter. The big :back 'duo ..... To-rnixtr'trp -t nn t-, of Grant Naylor and Jacob Wallis proved effective once more. Naylor (28-233 yards)put one in for points in the 2nd quarter to put the score at 14-0 Braves moving into the half mark. If Grant Naylor didn't have his hands on the ball it pound wasn't putting out theyards/points for the Braves then it was versatile quarterback Nick Stroud stepping up to shake and bake for big yardage (5 rushes for 119 yards). Stroud did just this with around 6 minutes left in the was Jacob Wallis steamrolling opponents to the tune of 8 carries for 61 yards on the night. Grant Naylor broke free for 51 yards after the half in the 3rd quarter to put Mt. Zion up 21-0 after the Justin Mikeworth boot. game from 39 yards out to put the Braves up 28-0. The Braves put the final score to the board by Grant Naylor with around 5 minutes left in the game.
