There was a fierce dog barking behind a fence that had a taste for book bags, a neighborhood bully looking for a fight, or a crazy old newspaper columnist who sits on his porch waiting to scream "get off my lawn" at young whippersnappers. Maybe you had all of the above but I hm certain everyone had a haunted house to pass by along the way. I know we did. It used to be a farmhouse and at was one time on the edge of town until the new housing developments to the east were built. At that point the old farmhouse stood out in contrast to all the new homes that sprang up right next door and into those new homes moved children who found the old homestead in their p~hs to get to and from school. It immediately received haunted house status from the youngsters. We told all sorts of tales about the house that was two stories surrounded by tall trees. some overgrown bushes and had been unlived in (at least by the living) for some time. You walked on the other side of the street stopping to stare at the big old, long windows with shadows dancing behind them in the afternoon sun. You dared each other to go up and knock on the door or peek in a window before everyone decided we'd better get home before our parents started to worry. One day my sister and brother-in-law came home to tell us they were through with apartment life and had bought a house. We were all excited Sunday Funday Ladies Day ! Wonderful Holiday Gifts! \ e and piled in the cars to go see the "new" place. It wasn't a far away and when we pulled in to the drive I was certain there had been a mistake. Out of all the " houses in the world, what did they do? They bought THE HAUNTED HOUSE? Are you serious, people? Have a nice life sis. I'm not going in that place - EVER! But before I could have a feet don't fail me now moment. Morn and Dad had drug me out Of the car and hauled me inside. Once inside with everyone in it talking about remodeling, building on and fixing up the place lost some of its spookiness as there appeared to be no witches, evidence of satanic sacrifices or monsters upstairs. Not all my friends passing by got the message that the house was becoming unhaunted because within the next few days a group came strolling by after school. My mom and others were in the house working, she saw them and pulled back the curtain further to wave. While I had regaled her with stories about the house continually, she did not know that sometimes we picked up rocks when going by the house m case a goblin should dart out and we had to defend ourselves. She also was not aware she was going to strike real fear into them and that one of them would toss a rock through the window as a result. The rock missed her and, you had to know my mom. instead of being mad she could not stop laughing because she had never seen such a look of real horror on anyone's face. The window was fixed but it took a bit of time to convince my schoolmates that all was okay" within the walls. In a few years, my parents and I actually moved into the house. My bedroom was even in the dreaded upstairs of the haunted house that was really not very haunted at all...except for maybe the attic! So Bob Vila. call me and we'll resurrect your home repair show with a supernatural theme. Who doesn't love a fixer upper with a crew of zombies? Been there done that! Mt.
