Mt. Zion Soccer sweeps Charleston 4-0 to take Class 2A Regional Championship
After grabbing a tie last
week to Hoopeston, Mt. Zion
cime out ready in Regionals
in Mattoon.
By the time the
championship had rolled
around against Charleston
this past Saturday Mt. Zion
showed control and
domination. Mt. Zion picked
up its first Soccer Regional
Championship in over a
decade.

Kaleb Verkuilen scored on
the Trojans to put it I-0 Mt.
Zion at the 36: I I mark in the
I st period.
The Braves controlled the
ball eariy on with multiple
shots on goal.
Then at 16:32 left in the ist
period Mt, Zion's Alex
Graham swept up towards the
goal on a follow up shot to
put Mt. Zion up 2-0.
Verkuilen would hit the net
once more with 25:44 left in
the contest to put Mt. Zion up
3-0.
Mt. Zion's 4 and final goal
came from a long kick from
Jack Locke at the 10:30
mark.
The Braves retained the
sweep status partly due to the
efforts of Mt. Zion Goalie
Charlie Otta with 8 saves on
the night. One of these saves
stood out at the 9:15 mark
when Charleston had a
penalty kick option and Otta
deflected the chance.
The Braves boosted their
record to 18-1-1 and will
travel to Champaign
Centennial. If they defeat
Normal U-High Tuesday
they will compete against
Centennial or Springfield
High Friday night at 6:00 PM
for the Sectional
Championship.

U-High @ 5:00 PM. If they win they will play Friday, October 28th @ 6:00 PM vs. either Champaign-

Braves beat Bethalto in non-conference bout
Mt. Zion boosted it's record
to 7-2 by defeating non-
conference St. Louis belt
competition Bethalto this past
Friday on the road 47-14.
Mt. Zion young back # 25
Austin Ray continued to
impress witih a 286 yard rush
effort and 5 touchdowns to
his name.
As Mt. Zion backs Grant
Naylor and Jacob Willis
continue to fight injury Ray
fit into the picture nicely for
the Braves game plan.
Mt. Zion controlled the
game with 536 yards of
offense compared to the
Eagles 228.
The Braves managed to
wear down the Eagle Offense
after the 1 st half as they did
not score again on Mt. Zion
in the latter part of the game.
The Braves will get a
chance at revenge in Class 4A
IHSA 1 st Round Playoffs as
they will play host to
Effingham Saturday, Oct,.
29th @ 2:00 PM.
Effingham knocked off Mt.
Zion by one point earlier in
the season to disrupt the
Braves 20+ Apollo Win
Streak.
